Autosomal DNA

A recent breakthrough in DNA testing for genealogy is a new form of autosomal DNA testing. This test checks autosomal chromosomes, the other 22 pairs beyond the sexlinked X and Y chromosomes.

Both men and women can take this type of test. Compared to Y-DNA and mtDNA tests, it is broader, but shallower. It can find matches in ANY branch of your family tree. It is not limited to just the narrow paternal or maternal lines.

The autosomal DNA test only works when people share relatively recent ancestors. Relationships out to the second cousin level are virtually certain to show up. The chance of finding a match with a particular relative begins to decline slightly with third cousins.

Speaker

The speaker at the June WAGS meeting will be Dr. Stephen Baird, who will talk about autosomal DNA.

Dr.Baird received both his Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology and his Doctor of Medicine degree from Stanford University. After residency at Stanford from 1972-74 in Anatomic Pathology and UCSD from 1974-76 in Clinical Pathology, Dr. Baird joined the faculty at UCSD in July 1976 as a Professor in Residence at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in immunopathology. Dr. Baird was promoted to Professor of Clinical Pathology in July, 1991.
