BLUE LAKES SCHOOL

(Picture unavailable. Unless someone out there has one. I know there are pictures of it)

The Blue Lakes School District was organized in 1869 and the original school was located on the south edge of the lower Blue Lake, along the toll road. After a boy on his way school drowned, the building was moved away from the lake to the north about 1/4 mile, into a little "niche" right up against a very steep mountain, on the north side of Highway 20. School was still held there during World War II, and then the building was turned into a home.

In 1946 a contract was drawn with the Upper Lake Union School to become a part of that district and the annexation took place in the fall of 1947. The school house and its site reverted to Paul Eaton, the son of the donor of the land. Later the property was sold and the building converted into a home. In 1951 it was bought by Mrs. Alethea B. Smythe, who had been a student at the school from 1894 to 1903 (Alethea B. Smith), in grades one through nine. It is still standing and occupied today.
