KELSEYVILLE ACADEMY

It was in the year 1886, that Mr. Caldwell (Stewart Smith Caldwell??), a Presbyterian minister, came to Kelseyville to build the Academy on a slight bench immediately Southeast of the present Kelseyville High School and 100 yards Northwest of the top of Prospect Hill. (Some reports say it was located at about the north end of the present high school).

The two-story building was shaped like a Maltese Cross and contained three or four rooms, with the top floor being used as a skating rink. Two hundred-fifty feet south of the Academy was a two story dormatory for the students. Another building, later used for the music room for Kelseyville High School, was the residence of the Academy teacher.

Mr. Caldwell taught Algebra, Geometry, Latin, English, Hygene, Physics and other college prep courses. Some of the students who attended Kelseyville Academy under Mr. Caldwell were Henry Benson, P. Q. Robinson, George Piner, Mary Stanley and Bill Piner.

Professor Lawrence Copeland took over after Mr. Caldwell. Students under Professor Copeland were Leslie Hatfield, Josh Trailor, Charley Benson, Cliff Trailor, Nanny Renfro, Mamie Mather, Nettie Slocum, Willard Young and Harry Renfro.

In 1890 the Academy was abandoned. As students kept dropping out there was not enough tuition money to keep the school going. For years the buildings were used as boarding houses and then they burned.
