Any information that is missing from the index below is unknown. Prior to the year 1940, only name and date of death is indicated.

Death registrations were required within the State of California beginning in the year 1905. However, it took many years to implement fully the law within the County of Lassen. Unless a family lived in or near the county seat, death records often were never filed up until about the year 1920. Therefore, many deaths that occurred within Lassen County prior to the year 1920 were not recorded. Death records in Lassen County prior to 1905 are extremely sparse and none are included here.

The law requiring the recording of death registrations for Native Americans was not actively enforced by the County of Lassen prior to the year 1920. Many Native American deaths within Lassen County went unrecorded as late as the 1960’s.

The Lassen County death records contain many errors, especially as far as the places of birth of decedents. Proper state postal codes were not used in some cases. For example, MI usually means Michigan, but also was used erroneously for Minnesota; AK usually means Alaska, but also was used erroneously for Arkansas; MS usually means Mississippi, but also was used erroneously for Missouri; etc. Only U.S. states, major U.S. territories, Canada, and Mexico have birthplace codes in the following index. The notation ‘EL’ means ‘elsewhere’, as in ‘elsewhere in the world (not U.S., a major U.S. territory, Canada, or Mexico)’. Verifying correct birthplace is up to the individual researcher.
