Lou Midkiff 18 NOV 1996 POTTER
Hello, I am researching my husband's
Potter
family. They spent years during the 1850's in California, both
Mendocino
and Butte Counties. I understand that they filed for homesteads in
Mendocino
county and owned land until at least 1864. John POTTER was the oldest
relative
I have on record, born 1795 in South Carolina (?), he died about 1851
in
Butte Co., CA. His son, William POTTER, b: July 6, 1825 in Sadalia,
Pettis
Co., MO, came to Texas from Mendocino County. I know he was in
California
by December, 1856 as his son William H.POTTER was born on that date in
Mendocino County. I also know he was there until at least December 15,
1864, as my husband's grandfather was born in Potter Valley, California
on that date (source: We Veitches, Veatches, Veaches, Veches" compiled
by Laurence Rawlin Guthrie) Any information is appreciated
regarding
full name, date of birth and place of birth of these men is
appreciated.

31 DEC 1996 ROSE
I need help on John Edward ROSE, Jr. Parish record in Durness, Scotland has him bapt 20 July 1832, but he always used 20 Aug 1832 as birthdate. Worked his way by ship from Canada to San Francisco, arrived 16 Oct 1855. He was naturalized 29 Jul 1867 in Monterey County. Lived in Eureka 1883-1890.Listed in 1890 Mendocino County Great Register, having registered 24 May 1890. Family legend has it that he died on his 60th birday (family lists death date as 20 August 1892) in a hospital in Ukiah from complications of Bright's disease, and was buried in IOOF cemetery. HOWEVER, there is no record of him in Mendocino county as hospitalized, died, buried there.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. This is my great grandfather, and he was, to say the least, alienated from his wife and family at the time of his death!
