The Mono County Historical Society was established by Lee Symmonds in 1963.  Symmonds was the first curator of the Mono County Museum in Bridgeport.  The Mono County Museum is the original Bridgeport Elementary School building, built in 1880.  It was originally situated at the corner of Kingsley and School Streets, but in the last week of March in 1964, the structure was moved to its present location in Bridgeport Park.  In January of 1965 Lee Symmonds announced that the museum was ready to accept artifacts and by June of the same year, the museum was open for business.  Some of the museum's special collections include Ella Cain's Paiute Indian basket collection.  (compiled from the Society's 2001 Newsletter)
