JOSEPH N. HUBERT

Joseph N. Hubert, of 417 Pine street, Monterey, is now successfully engaged in business as a painting contractor. He was born on a farm in New Hampshire, October 2, 1857, a son of John G. and Jennie E. (Lowe) Hubert, his father being also a painter. The family came to California in February, 1876, and located at San Francisco, where, the very same year, the father died. The mother still survives him, having now reached the advanced age of ninety years.

Joseph N. Hubert attended the public schools of Massachusetts, to which state the family had removed during his boyhood, and in that commonwealth he learned the trade of a painter, working with his father, until the latter's death. He then took up contracting for himself, at the age of nineteen, and was in business at Vacaville, Solano county, California, for twenty-five years. In 1906 he came to Monterey, and here he has met with success. He has painted the Monterey grammar school, the Pacific Grove grammar school, and many residences and public buildings, and he keeps a force of eight men busy all the time. As early as 1880 he did some painting in Monterey county. He is particular as to his business methods, and always in favor of sanity in trade, business and finance.

Mr. Hubert married Miss Ida E. Mein, and to them were born two children: Ralph, who served his country during the World war and died at the early age of twenty-eight years; Esta, a graduate nurse, who is now the wife of Dr. Wilbur Millett, of Portland, Oregon. Fraternally Mr. Hubert is a Mason and a member of the Loyal Order of Moose, while politically he is a republican.
