C. ARTELLAN

Charles Artellan for 25 years prior to his retirement a gardener in Monterey City's department of buildings and grounds died yesterday morning at his home, 1108 Patterson Lane in Del Monte Park.

While Mr. Artellan had been under medical care recently, his death was unexpected.

He was a native of Monterey where he was born April 4, 1888, a member of a pioneer Peninsula family. At one time his family owned a large acreage in the Carmel Area, including the site of the Peninsula Community Hospital.

He attended the San Carlos Parochial School, and during his early years often served as a caddy at the Del Monte golf course. Later he drove a team of horses for Charley Norton, superintendent of streets in Monterey, and operated the street car that ran between Monterey and Pacific Grove.

City Gardener in 1932

He worked off and on for many years for the city of Monterey and in 1932 became a full time gardener, continuing in this post until his retirement in September of 1953.

Mr Artellan was a veteran of World War I, and a member of Monterey Post 41 American Legion. His wife Isabel preceded him in death many years ago.

Surviving are his daughter Mrs. Clementine Silva of Pacific Grove, a sister Mrs. Lottie Carlson of San Francisco, a half brother Milton DeSoto of Rockford Ill, two grandchildren and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Funeral services are pending at the Dorney and Farlinger Memorial Chapel and will be announced later.
