James L Artellan, native of Big Sur and lifelong resident of the Monterey Peninsula, died this morning at the home of his daughter in Seaside. Although he had been under medical observation for a heart condition, his death was unexpected.
Mr. Artellan was born March 10, 1894, at Big Sur. He attended school in Monterey and worked for many years for the City of Monterey. He was married in Monterey Aug. 5, 1918 to Minnie Espinosa, member of another early Peninsula family. Their home was on Upper Circle, Carmel Valley. He was a member of San Carlos Catholic Church.
Surviving Mr. Artellan are his wife Minnie, of Carmel Valley; a son Ralph of Monterey; two daughters, Mrs. Ralph Rodrigues of Seaside, Mrs. Louis Machado of Carmel Valley; five sisters Mrs. Juanita Silva of Seaside, Mrs. Robert Walters of Monterey, and Mrs. Anthony Barbie, Mrs. Ida Winters and Mrs. Theresa Berquist, all of Seaside; two half sisters, Mrs. Lollie Silva of Seaside, Mrs. Antonia Souza of Hayward; and nine grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements are pending at Dorney and Farlinger Memorial Chapel.
