PIONEER FAMILY MEMBER BURIED
A man who was born in Monterey 76 years ago, and whose entire life has been spent on or about the
Peninsula was tendered a final tribute this morning by scores of relatives and friends when funeral services were
held in San Carlos church for Peter Artellan, member of one of Monterey's oldest pioneer families.
Artellan died Friday evening following a lengthy illness. The large funeral cartage started from
the Dorney chapel at 10:15 am this morning. A requiem mass was said in San Carlos Church at 10:30 am, followed by
interment in the Atrellan family plot in the Catholic cemetery.
Artellan was one of the oldest employees of the Del Monte Properties company, and helped break ground
for the original Del Monte Hotel in 1880 as an employee of the old P B Company. He was one of the best reinsmen in this
section in the old days, and drove many famous people about the peninsula with four and six in hands when the tallyho
was the popular mode of transportation.
Atrellan was one of the group of old timers of Monterey, the numbers of which are gradually dwindling.
Included among his pallbearers at the funeral this morning were several life long friends. Pallbearers were Charles
Miller, Markus Vargus, Robert Wolter, William Tripp, Harry Jewell, and Fred Mira. Honorary pallbearers were Manuel
Muntz, Fred Silva, Fred Dana, Frank Wilson, and Joe Torres.
Surviving relatives include a son J W Artellan of Monterey, three daughters, Mrs. Rose Carroll of
Monterey, Mrs. Annie Oltera and Miss Lizzie Artellan , both of San Francisco, a brother Pancho Artellan of San
Francisco, two sisters Mrs. Mary Butler and Juana Leoni both of Watsonville, and a step brother Joe Dutra of Monterey.
