V. ARTELLAN IS KILLED; CAUSE IS ACCIDENTAL
Was Stretching Cable Over Carmel River When Hook Bent
His skull crushed by a pulley block while engaged in working for the county at the Carmel river, Vincente Artellan was killed instantly at 2:45 o'clock yesterday afternoon.
Artellan was a member of a force of men employed by Roadmaster F. A. Serrano. The men were engaged in stretching a cable at the jetty above the bridge near the Oliver ranch. This was being done so that trees could be suspended so as to divert the current of the river to protect the bridge.
Three horses had made a pull on the cable when one of the hooks in the pulley block gave way and the block flew forty feet through the air striking Artellan on the skull and killing him instantly. Serrano and Ed Austin, who were standing within two feet on either side of Artellan, narrowly escaped death. Drs. W. L. Teaby and M. McCauley were summoned by telephone but their efforts to revive the man were fruitless.
The men were making ready to tie the stretched cable to a pile when the pulley snapped.
Artellan was married only six months ago to Rena Torres. Besides his wife he leaves his mother Mrs. Juan Soto; and three sisters.
