DEATH OF MRS. HIRAM COREY
Passed Away Surrounded by the Loving and the Loved.
At 8 o'clock last evening Mrs. Hiram Corey, after a long illness, died at her Las Palmas home
on the Buena Vista, about four miles south of Salinas.
Mrs. Corey's maiden name was Rosanna Frost. She was born in Addison county, Vermont, May 21, 1834.
When 5 years of age she moved with her parents to Essex county in that state. On October 26, 1856, when twenty-two
years old she was married to Hiram Corey and they came to California by way of Panama the same year, first making
their home in Marin county.
They came to the Salinas Valley in 1871, and settled on the Buena Vista, where they have lived ever
since, except a year spent in traveling on the continent of Europe. The same year they came to the Salinas Valley
Mrs. Corey's sister, Mrs. Sarah Littlefield, died in Sonoma county, leaving four children, two sons and two daughters,
who were taken and raised by Mr. and Mrs. Corey. They are Mrs. G. A. Daugherty, Mrs. B. V. Sargent and W. A. Littlefield
of Salinas and E. E. Littlefield of Natividad. All of them were present with loving attention during Mrs. Corey's
illness and when she passed away. Her devoted husband and her only surviving brother, Henry Frost of Point Arena,
were at her bedside when the dread summons came.
In 1891 Mr. And Mrs. Corey left the old ranch house and moved into an elegant new home on the lower
end of their ranch, known as Las Palmas.
Mrs. Corey was a devout Christian and an earnest worker in the United Presbyterian Church of this
city of which she was a member. She was also a good friend and supporter of the Presbyterian Church at Agenda.
She was a kind hearted lady, a devoted wife and good friend. During her long illness she was a great sufferer
and death to her was really a welcome relief.
