Place Names

Whipple Well offers one of the most complete online databases of California Place Names I've found so far. They currently have 1,860 place names for Monterey County:

  • Place names beginning with Ab - Es

  • Place names beginning with Es - Me

  • Place names beginning with Me - Sa

  • Place names beginning with Sa - Zu
  • To locate any place found in the above listing using it's coordinates (Latitude and Longitude) you can easily convert them to work in Google Maps.

    Instructions for coordinates conversion:

This example shows how to locate a place using Google Maps and the coordinates found in the above list. The coordinates for the "Sargent School" are listed as:
    Latitude "355638N"
    Longitude "1204753W"

    1. Convert the latitude by inserting a decimal point after the SECOND digit, and remove the directional [N] reference.

The latitude of "355638N" will become "35.5638"
Enter this number first in the search box of Google Maps.

    2. Convert the longitude by entering a decimal point after the THIRD digit, and remove the directional [W] reference. Then place a minus [-] in front of this number.

The longitude of "1204753W" will become "-120.4753"
Enter this number second in the search box of Google Maps.

    3. Seperate the latitude and longitude with a comma, then click on "Search Maps."

So the coordinates I'll enter in the search box of Google Maps to find the "Sargent School" I'll change:

    From this:   355638N 1204753W
    To this:       35.5638, -120.4753

And this is the map Google will return: Map: 35.5638, -120.4753
