Pacific Grove Hometown Bulletin, CA Sept. 20, 2006, p21
Board and Batten Aug/Sept. 1991 issue
John Porter Pryor, well known civic leader of early Pacific Grove, was born on July 6, 1859 in San Antonio, Texas. He was a page in the state senate, which lead to an appointment to the Naval Academy at Annapolis. He then attended the George Washington University law school and after graduation was admitted to the bar in the State of Virginia. It was in Alexandria, Virginia, that he met Eliza Sappington Smyth and they were married in 1884. Mr. Pryor and his family came to San Mateo, California, in 1898 where he worked as a special agent for the United States Land Office. The family moved to Pacific Grove in 1905 and Mr. Pryor took the job of general agent for the Pacific Improvement Company. They lived on Laurel Avenue until the family home at 429 Ocean View Boulevard was completed in 1908-09. John Pryor was an ambitious civic leader and was instrumental in many of the early developments in Pacific Grove. He was active in the museum association, the Chautauqua’s, and St. Mary’s-by—the-Sea. He was a collector of customs, a stockholder in the Del Mar Canning Company, and an original director of the Monterey Bank and the San Carlos Hotel. He was an original member of the board of trustees of the City of Pacific Grove and was instrumental in obtaining the property for Asilomar. He served as mayor from 1912 thru 1914 and again for two terms from 1927 thru 1931. He was mayor when the city manager charter was inaugurated. Mr. Pryor spent ten years with the Pacific Improvement Company before going into business for himself. He opened a real estate and insurance business in Monterey, which he operated until his death on September 17, 1944. Editor’s note: The above information was taken from an interview with Mrs. Duncan Murray, Mr. Pryor’s daughter, as published in Game & Gossip magazine.
