Community activist Roy Holtz a legacy of service
Memorial services were held last Saturday afternoon at Pacific Grove’s Mayflower Presbyterian Church for Roy H. Holtz, excellent watchmaker, jeweler and local community leader who died on March 27 at Community Hospital. Born in 1928 at Stockton, Mr. Holtz discovered Pacific Grove on a trip after graduating from Bradley University’s School of Horology in Peoria, Illinois. He and his wife, Phyllis, moved here in 1950. He is survived as well by their daughter, Sharon. Mr. Holtz worked at Fort Ord watch repair before starting his own business inside the front doors of Holman’s in 1965. He continued there for 33 years – until the building was sold to Ford’s. He opened The Carmel Timekeeper in The Barnyard, working there with Sharon until his retirement in 1989. Mr. Holtz was a member of Pacific Grove Masonic Lodge, Monterey Elks, Monterey Peninsula Country Club, SIRS Sons in Retirement, Bay Area Watchmaker Guild (lifetime), and a 25-year perfect attendance member (plus past president) of Pacific Grove Rotary Club. He served for 15 years as trustee and was a past president of Pacific Grove Board of Education 91966-81). Awards include Pacific Grove Rotary President’s Award for Unselfish Service 91965-66), Rotarian of the Year (1974-75), Rotary Special Award for outstanding service to community and club (1991-92). Mr. Holtz also was a founding member of PG PRIDE (raising funds for school needs). He received its Sweetheart Award for exceptional service (1984-85).
