John Van Geen, a retired engineer, died Tuesday at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula. He was 70. Born Aug. 17, 1929, in Etterbeck, Belgium, he lived in Carmel Valley for 11 years after moving from Sunnyvale. In 1953, he graduated from Brussels University with a degree in electrical and radio engineering. Mr. Van Geen retired from Stanford Research Institute in Menlo Park in 1989 after 30 years. He had been a member of the Belgian Air Force, and he was a private pilot and a member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. He is survived by his wife, Odette; a son, Robert Van Geen, of Waikoloa, Hawaii; a daughter, Brigitte Fromknecht of Gastonia, N.C.; and one grandson. His ashes will be scattered at sea. The Paul Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. The family suggests that memorial contributions be sent to the American Heart Association, Salinas or the Food Bank of Monterey County, Salinas.
