Monterey Peninsula Herald, CA Sept. 25, 1956 p4
Samuel Hartley Greene, founder of the California Dairy Council and secretary-manager of that organization until his retirement in 1946, died in Carmel last night. He had been in ill health since suffering a heart attack Sept. 14. Born in Saco, Maine, Mr. Greene came to California in the 1890ís entering the dairy business in San Francisco in 1899. He founded the California Dairy Council in 1919, introduced milk programs in public schools and established the dairy building and exhibit at the Golden Gate International Exposition in 1939. In 1944 the University of California presented him with a citation for leadership in the field of nutritional education. In January of this year diary industry leaders came from all over the state to honor him with a testimonial dinner in Carmel on his 86th birthday. A former resident of the bay area, Mr. Greene and his wife Heid Magnusdotter Greene, came to Carmel in 1953. He was a member of Live Oak Lodge 61 F&AM in Oakland and the Commonwealth Club of California. In addition to his wife, he leaves two grandsons, Hartley Balsdon Greene Jr. of Monterey and Donald Wilson Greene of Whittier. He is also survived by a great grandson Dennis Kieth Greene of Whittier, a nephew W.F. Greene of Martinez, a niece Mrs. T.C. Flynn of Fresno and several other nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 3 p.m. at the Chapel of the Chimes, Oakland. Past presidents of the California Dairy Council will be honorary pallbearers. Paul Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
