James M. Burton, 85, a resident of Pacific Grove for the past 12 years, died yesterday afternoon at his home, 618 Alder St., after an extended illness. Mr. Burton was born June 3, 1874, in Fresno, a member of an older pioneer family of that area. He spent all his life, up to his retirement in the city of his birth and was employed by the Pacific Telephone Co., there, first in construction, later as an inspector. He was a charter member of the John I. Sabin Chapter, Telephone Pioneers of Fresno. He and his wife, Millie, were married in Fresno on Nov. 15, 1898. In addition to his wife, Mrs. Millie Burton of Pacific Grove, he leaves a son, Vernon Burton of Fresno; a daughter, Mrs. G.E. Hummer of Pacific Grove; two brothers, Allen Burton of San Francisco and Henry Burton of Fresno; six sisters, Mrs. Chris Heinsen, Mrs. Nancy Mae Staver, Mrs. Hattie Bernhard, Mrs. Guy Olgard and Mrs. Frankie Clark, all of Fresno, and Mrs. Eddie Weit of Wasco; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday in the Paul Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Lee Sadler officiating. Burial will follow in Mission Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Paul Varien, Lyle Richards, Benjamin Higbie, Bert Muyzer, DeWitt Lee and Mert Austin.

Sabin Chapter Telephone Pioneers of Fresno. Husband of Mrs. Millie Burton of Pacific Grove. Father of Vernon Burton of Fresno and Mrs. G.E. Hummer of Pacific Grove. Brother of Allen Burton of San Francisco, Henry Burton of Fresno, Mrs. Chris Heinson, Mrs. Nancy Mae Staver, Mrs. Hattie Bernhard, Mrs. Guy Olgard, and Mrs. Frankie Clark, all of Fresno and Mrs. Eddie Weit of Wasco. Also survived by four grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Services will be held in the Paul Funeral Chapel Monday, August 31, 1959 at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Lee Sadler officiating. Interment will following Mission Memorial Park. The Paul Mortuary in charge of funeral arrangements.
