Monterey Peninsula Herald, CA Feb. 17, 1961 p6
Word has been received of the death early yesterday morning in Los Gatos of William Johnson Gould, 92, long prominent in the early business and civic life of Pacific Grove, Mr. Gould died in a Los Gatos rest home following a brief illness. A native of Council Bluffs, Iowa, he came as a child with his family to live in Cholame Valley in the southeast part of Monterey County. Near the turn of the century he was employed as a coachman at old Del Monte Hotel and was a member of the hotelís famous tug-of-war team. In 1909 he established his own hay, fuel and building material business on Lighthouse avenue and four years later made his home in Pacific Grove, where he served on the city council, as mayor and as president of the chamber of commerce. He was a former president of the Rotary Club and was active in the community chest and in Boy Scout work. When the automobile succeeded the horse, Mr. Gould opened a garage and the coming of natural gas curtailed his fuel business. In the early Ď40s he sold out to Borchers & Son and moved to Los Gatos, where he made his home at 17671 Bruce Ave. His son, the late William Gould, former editor and co-owner of The Tide, Pacific Grove newspaper, died Dec. 18, 1958. Surviving are three granddaughters, Mrs. Thelma Ellison of Modesto, Miss Marian Gould of Monterey and Miss Christine Gould of Campbell; and two great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Saturday in the West Valley Chapel, Los Gatos, followed by private inurnment. Friends wishing to make contributions in the memory of Mr. Gould may do so in the form of donations to the W.E. Gould Memorial Fund, San Jose State College.
