Pacific Grove Tribune Fri., May 18, 1945
Lt. James R. Fauth in First Mission From German Base
A Ninth Air Force Fighter Bomber Base, Germany – Second Lieut. James R. Fauth of Pacific Grove and eleven other American pilots can lay claim to an epic first mission in this war of miracle “firsts.” They were the first Yanks to take off from an air base in Germany and complete a successful mission. Toward the end of March Lt. Fauth and eleven other P-38 Lightning pilots of the 428th Fighter-Bomber squadron were returning from a patrol job over the bridgehead. Dangerous cloud and rain made it unsafe for the Ninth Air Force pilots to land at their home base. A quick decision was made by weather and flying control officers and the Lightnings were ordered to land at a newly constructed airfield deep in Germany. American engineers scrambled off the still unfinished runway as the planes zoomed out of the overcast. Early next morning, Lt. Fauth and his eleven buddies again roared off to provide an aerial “umbrella” for hard-fighting American troops expanding the Rhine bridgehead. That mission was completely successful. Lieutenant Fauth’s wife, the former Miss Frances Parker, and their two sons, Donald and Jimmie reside at 813 Locust avenue, Pacific Grove.
