Carmel Valley Pioneer Passes
Death came suddenly last evening to Samuel Van Scarlett, pioneer resident of Carmel Valley at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John R. Leslie of 314 Third street, Pacific Grove. A native of Fairfax, Missouri, he was 71 years of age. Mr. Scarlett came to Carmel Valley in 1908, engaging in ranching on the property which is still the family home. For a time he was associated in blacksmithing in New Monterey with the late John Bussey. He was among the oldest members of Pacific Grove Lodge No. 331, F&AM, receiving his 50y-ear insignia at ceremonies held four years ago. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Lou E. Scarlett of Carmel Valley; four daughters, Mrs. John R. Leslie of Pacific Grove, Mrs. Roy Lindquist and Mrs. Gilbert Selfridge of Reno, and Mrs. Loren Wilder of Carmel Valley; three sons, Truman E. and Ariel I. Scarlett of Carmel Valley, and Art L. Scarlett of Sacramento; 12 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Paul Mortuary, Pacific Grove, with the Rev. John A.
