Pioneer Educator Succumbs
The death last evening in a local rest home of Miss Eugenia Murray marked the passing of an important figure in the “little red school house” era of the Monterey Peninsula. Seriously devoted to her chosen profession of teaching, Miss Murray numbered among her pupils in Monterey over a half century ago and those who studied with her later at Nottley’s Landing and in Palo Colorado, many of today’s successful businessmen. She was born March 15, 1865, in San Francisco, and there received her education. In 1875 her family purchased the Palo Colorado Ranch, which continued to be her home until it was finally sold in 1942 to its present owners. Until her schooling was completed, she spent holidays there, and when she took a position in the Monterey schools in the ‘90’s, followed the winding trail on horseback each week end to Palo Colorado. Fine Horseman. Her friends of those early days remember her as a fine horsewoman. Throughout her long life she has been loved and respected for her unswerving integrity, her quiet humor, her interest in young minds. With a fellow teacher in the Monterey schools, Miss Charlotte Montgomery, now of San Francisco, Miss Murray made a tour of the world in 1901-02, and when she returned became a private tutor in San Francisco. Some years later she returned to teach at Nottley’s Landing and then in the little school at Palo Colorado. In 1921 the school was moved to a room in the ranch house itself. Her parents had long since died, and after the death of her brother, the late Robert Murray, in 1931, Miss Murray continued to live alone at the ranch, teaching until her failing eyesight forced her retirement some years ago. For the past three years she lived in a Monterey rest home. She is survived by a grand nephew, John Murray Vandall of San Francisco. Funeral services, to be arranged by The Paul Mortuary, will be announced later.
