Rev. A.E. Clay Dead After Long Illness
Rector Emeritus of St. Mary’s-by-the-Sea Succumbs at His Home
Death came yesterday evening to the Reverend Albert E. Clay, rector emeritus of St. Mary’s-by-the-Sea Episcopal Church. Pacific Grove. He died at a Peninsula hospital. He had been confined to his bed by illness since last October. Although he had been in failing health for several years, Mr. Clay maintained a keen interest in church affairs and the community life of the Peninsula until stricken by his last illness. A native of Canterbury, England, Mr. Clay was 82 years old. Long Service. A kindly, gentle man, Mr. Clay has served his church since his ordination as a minister in 1889. He was called to the Pacific Grove pulopit in 1926 and served there for 10 years until his retirement in 1936. He was not allowed complete retirement, however, and since that time has been called often to serve the St. Mary’s Church, assisting on special occasions or occupying the pulpit during the absence of the rector. For five months shortly after his retirement and again for six months in 1944 he served as priest in charge at the church. Until his last illness, he also maintained an active part in the life of his community, being a member of the Pacific Grove Service Club and the Pacific Grove Masonic Lodge. Ordained in Canada. Mr. Clay received his education at King’s School and St. Augustine’s Theological College, both in Canterbury, taking his degree at the latter in 1888. The following year he left his native land and went to Canada where he was ordained a minister in 1889 and a priest a year late. He served at St. John’s Church, Prescott, Ontario, for four years and then was called to the Holy Trinity Church at Delaware, Maryland, were he was rector for seven years. His next assignment, and his last before coming to Pacific Grove, was at the Church of the Redemption in Philadelphia, where he served as rector for 20 years. In 1904, Mr. Clay and Ellen G. Helliwell were married in Canada. His wife died eight years ago in Pacific Grove. Mr. Clay leaves two daughters, Mrs. Grace R. Hayden with whom he had made his home in Pacific Grove, and Mrs. Charles Muldoon of Palo Alto, and the following grandchildren: Ralph Hayden, a student at Amherst College; Mrs. John L. Bate of Portland; Mrs. Warren F. Graf of New York; Mrs. A.E. Vorse, Guam; Mrs. John Vanneman, Menlo Park, and Robert E. Muldoon of Palo Alto. There are also eight great-grandchildren. Masonic rites, as requested by Mr. Clay, will be conducted by Pacific Grove Lodge, F&AM, Thursday evening at 7:30 o’clock in The Paul Mortuary Chapel, with the Masonic Choir participating. Episcopal funeral services, with the Rev. D. Howard Dow officiating, will be held Friday morning at 10:30 o’ clock in St. Mary’s-by-the-Sea, followed by burial in El Carmelo Cemetery, Pacific Grove. The Paul Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
