Monterey County Herald, CA April 13, 2000
Dr. Daniel G. Vaughan, a leader in ophthalmology for more than forty years, passed away April 10th, after suffering a stroke and battling cancer. A native of Montana, he graduated from the University of Oregon Medical School; he served in the First Marine Division in China from 1946-1947 as a medical officer. He then returned to complete his residency in Ophthalmology at UCSD in 1951. He was in private practice in San Jose, CA since that time. He married Courtney Sprague in 1949 and together they raised eight children. During his distinguished career, he was a clinical professor of ophthalmology at UCSF and served as Governor, Francis I. Proctor Foundation for Research in Ophthalmology at UCSF. General Ophthalmology, which he co-authored, is in its 15th edition. This manual has been the “bible” of ophthalmology for most medical students and physicians in the United States and is currently translated into 5 languages. He was well published and served on numerous medical societies. Dr. Vaughan founded the Cecilia Vaughan Memorial Fellwoship at UCSD, after the loss of his daughter in an auto accident. A second scholarship in her name was established at the University of Santa Clara. Dr. Vaughan had a life long passion for golf. Beginning with “medalist” at the Oregon State Junior Golf Championship in 1938 at age 16, he proceeded to found the Mission Invitational Golf Tournament at the San Jose Country Club, an event which spanned 20 years and raised money for the Society for the Prevention of Blindness. Preceding him in death, daughter Cecilia Vaughan, he is survived by his wife of 50 years, Courtney Sprague Vaughan of Monte Sereno, CA; Laurie Vaughan Campbell, Sonoma, CA; Jim Vaughan, Rocklin, CA; Matt Vaughan, San Jose, CA; Mary Bassano, Santa Cruz, CA; Daniel S. Vaughan, Oakland, CA; Katie Bucks, Pleasanton, CA; and Sherry deLeuw, Monterey, CA; their spouses and 13 grandchildren. Donations preferred to Cecilia Vaughan Memorial Scholarship Fund, Santa Clara University, Santa Clara, or Cecilia Vaughan Memorial Fellowship, Francis I. Proctor Foundation for Research in Ophthalmology, University of California at Berkeley, or Cecilia Vaughan Memorial Eye Research Institute, University of Philippines, San Jose. Family and friends are invited to attend services this Friday, April 14, 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church, Los Gatos; private burial following. Arrangements by Darling-Fischer Chapel of the Hills, Los Gatos.
