Rollover causes auto death
A Gonzales man was killed Sunday morning when he was thrown from a rolling car that had flipped off Highway 101 near Gonzales, the California Highway Patrol reported. The accident was attributed to alcohol and high speed. Frank Carrasco, 28, was killed as the car rolled over him, authorities said. The driver, Gilberto Lopez Apodaca, 25, of Chualar was also thrown from the rolling car, but he wasn’t run over, the CHP said. He was listed in stable condition Sunday at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital. The CHP said Apodaca will be charged with vehicular manslaughter and possibly drunken driving. Officers said witnesses estimated the speed of Apodaca’s car at 90 to 100 mph when it ran off the pavement just north of Gonzales about 4 a.m. The car flipped over in the median of the freeway, tossing out both Apodaca and his passenger, Carraco. Officers said Apodaca admitted drinking several beers and becoming disoriented before the accident. The two men had attended a party in Soledad. An autopsy on Carrasco was scheduled today at the Monterey County Coroner’s office.
