Monterey - Gilbert Ford Kinney, a professor at the Naval Postgraduate School, died Sunday at Beverly Health Care Center in Monterey. He was 92. Born Dec. 29, 1907, in Judsonia, Ark., he lived in Monterey for more than 48 years. Mr. Kinney graduated from Arkansas College in Batesville, Ark., in 1928. He earned a master’s degree at the University of Tennessee, a doctorate in physical chemistry at New York University in 1935 and did post-graduate work in chemical engineering at Massachusetts institute of Technology in 1938. He joined the Navy in 1942, serving on active duty at the Naval Postgraduate School in Annapolis, Md., until 1946. He continued teaching at NPS, moving with the school to Monterey in 1952, and retired in 1971 as distinguished professor emeritus. He was a founding member of the school’s chapel. He was a civilian safety radiologist for Operation Crossroads Bikini in 1946 and served in the Navy Ready Reserves until 1964, retiring as a captain. In 1972, he was a senior scientist at the Naval Weapons Center in China Lake and later did consulting work at Sylvania, Hewlett-Packard, Spectromat, and Anamet. He belonged to a variety of professional organizations, including the American Chemical Society. He was also a member of the Monterey History and Art Association, MOWW, Navy League, Pebble Beach SIRS, and Haasis Hikers. His hobbies included traveling and visiting with family and friends. He is survived by a daughter, Abbott Hall of Pebble Beach; a son, Gilbert Kinney Jr. of Chico; a brother, Abbott Kinney of Dermott, Ark.; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. His wife, Martha, died in 1986. Private burial will take place at Mission Memorial Park in Seaside. Memorial services will beheld at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Naval Postgraduate School Chapel in Monterey. The family suggests that any memorial contributions be sent to the Casa Serrano Fund in care of the Monterey History and Art Association, Monterey.
