Monterey Peninsula Herald, CA Nov. 7, 1966 p2
Peninsula Painter Harold Landaker Dies
Harold Charles Landaker, well-known Peninsula artist and a member of the Carmel Art Association since coming to make his home in Pacific Grove 20 years ago, died yesterday morning in a local hospital. He had been in failing health for some time. Mr. Landaker was 74, a native of Chicago, Ill., where he studied at the Art Institute and the Academy of Fine Arts, financing his art studies by guiding, hunting, fishing and trapping in the north woods of Wisconsin and Michigan. A commission to decorate some equipment for a large amusement company, planned for a brief “job” lasted instead for 13 years, during which Landaker, his wife and small sons, traveled widely with the company and the artist gained a wealth of impressions of circus life, which have formed the basis for many of his colorful studies of clowns and other circus folk and scenes. He is known, too, for his paintings of birds and animals, full of whimsical humor, which have found their way into nurseries all over the country. With his wife, Mabel, also a member of the Carmel Art Association, he made his home at 136 2nd St. in Pacific Grove, and in the past several years traveled widely in Europe. In addition to his wife, he leaves two sons, Walter Landaker of Pacific Grove, also an artist, and Harold Landaker of Woodland Hills; a sister, Mrs. Gertrude Rubelman of Santa Susana; a brother, Walter Landaker of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; and four grandchildren. Funeral services are pending at the Paul Mortuary and will be announced later.
