Soldier is Drowned as Pal Escapes
Fishing Trip Down Coast Ends in Tragedy for Thos. Dellarco
One man was drowned and another narrowly escaped being battered to death on the rocks when he made a valiant but futile attempt to save his companion, 20 miles south of Carmel yesterday. Unable to swim, Private Thomas Dellarco, 24, of the Monterey Presidio, was swept into the sea while fishing near the Bixby Creek bridge. Corporal Junius Nielson plunged into the surf and swam to the drowning manís side. Several times the pair were battered against the almost perpendicular rocks as Nielson struggled to reach a place where Corporal Robert Murray, a third member of the party, would be able to assist him. Also unable to swim, Murray was powerless to aid as the surging water tossed his companions about. Dellarco became unconscious when the waves tore him from Nielsonís hand and threw him against the rocks but the swimmer again grasped his clothing and again tried to reach a break in the rocky wall. Time after time the waves threw him up against the rocks and finally, when he was on the point of exhaustion, Dellarco slipped from his grasp and sank from sight. Nielson made several efforts to locate him but was unable and climbed ashore cut and bleeding in a score of places. Presidio authorities were notified of the accident and Captain Guy Kurtz, of Battery E, 75th Field Artillery, superior officer of Dellarco, Nielson and Murray, started down the coast with a detail of men to attempt to find the drowned manís body. Nielson was rushed to the presidio hospital when Captain Kurtz arrived on the scene of the accident and the search for Dellarcoís body was started. Men patrolled the shore for a considerable distance all day yesterday and through the night, but did not sight the body. Dellarcoís home is in Paducah, Kentucky. Nielson was not seriously injured and will be released from the post hospital in a few days.
