Ernest Coltrain Dies As Result of Accident Injuries
Ernest Coltrain, 80, well known waterfront figure and a pioneer Montereyan, died at the county hospital in Salinas as a result of injuries received April 22 when he was struck down by a bus at the Del Monte Avenue and Alvarado Street crossing. Coltrain was a sheet metal worker in his early days. He was born Dec. 13, 1872 on a plantation in Thomasville, N.C. His first trip here was by sailing boat around Cape Horn when he was still a small boy. As a young man, Coltrain was acquainted with Arthur Brisbane and other notables. He had a drink with Stanford White in New York the night he was shot to death in the world famous Shaw murder case. Coltrain worked on the first air brake, and worked throughout Virginia and Maryland in sheet metal shops and with the railroad. For a time he fired for Norfolk and Western. He worked on the copper crosses for St. Paulís and St. Peterís churches in San Francisco, and later came to Watsonville where he was employed at the Appleton Hotel. He was brought to Monterey by Frank Pierce of the Pierce and Towel hardware store, then located where the Smith Hardware site is today, to do sheet metal work. Coltrain made the copper box containing records which was placed in the Elks building cornerstone in 1916. Funeral services are pending at Dorney & Farlinger Funeral Home in Monterey.
