Pacific Grove Woman Killed When Hit By Car (Elizabeth Neely Ockey)
“Accidental death as a result of having been struck by an automobile,” was the verdict of the coroner’s jury at the inquest Wednesday morning in the death of Elizabeth Neely, known as Mrs. Elizabeth Ockey of Pacific Grove, who was fatally injured on the Pacific Grove cut off near Carmel Hill last Friday night about 6:30. Funeral services have not yet been arranged, pending word from relatives of the deceased. The remains are at Paul’s mortuary in Pacific Grove. R.R. Dougherty of Carmel was the driver of the car which struck the 55-year-old woman as she walked along the road near the toll gate entrance to the 17 Mile Drive. He declared that he failed to see her until after the fender of his car had struck the woman. Dougherty immediately placed the injured woman in his car and took her to a hospital where she died shortly afterwards. Efforts to locate relatives have been made during the past week and thus far a brother in New York and a nephew in Nebraska have been notified. The tragic death ended a pathetic struggle for existence, which the woman has made for a long time, in preference to accepting charity. She had spent the day Friday peddling a holder for pots and pans from door to door in Carmel and was returning wearily to the Grove when the accident occurred. Investigation revealed that she had started to cross the highway in front of the approaching car, apparently too tired to be aware of it. Authorities investigating the case learned that her closest friend was jack Terrell, formerly a roomer at her home, who is serving a term in the county jail for vagrancy. She used frequently to visit him at the jail and bring him gifts of food from her own scant store. Terrell was obviously grieved by news of Mrs. Ockey’s death and told officers that she had deeds to some property hidden somewhere in her house and that he believed she had an insurance policy. On court order he accompanied Coroner J.A. Cornett and Jailer Guy Abbott to her home Saturday but a search failed to reveal the papers. It was learned by Coroner Cornett this week that Mrs. Ockey’s correct name was Miss Elizabeth Neely. Although she believed herself married a few years ago, she learned when she applied for a divorce that the marriage had never been legal.

Neely, Elizabeth, age 46, died in Monterey County, CA on Jan. 26, 1934, #9771
