Frank Troia – a man on the go
By Art Alexander
Frank Troia never stands still. He’s no hard to find though. Leave a message on his recoreder and he will call back within an hour or so. Up at 4:30, he dresses and is out to coffee by 5. Frank has dedicated his life to community service and lowering his golf score. Frank, raised in New York, came to Pacific Grove in 1939 to visit his uncle who got him a job as a carpenter. With war eminent, Frank joined the Army in 1939. When the war broke, Frank was experienced and was assigned to a special unit teaching squad tactics and hand to hand combat in camps throughout the U.S. He served in the South Pacific and was transferred to Hawaii to teach ROTC at the University of Hawaii until his discharge in 1945. Back in Pacific Grove, Frank worked in several of the 15 small mom and pop grocery stores in the Grove. He helped his family establish the Troia Market. He soon tired o fthe confines of the store and wanted to be out and about. Frank became a milkman with Carnation. He then went to Mission Creamer on Lighthouse, which later became meadow Gold. He moved up to Regional Manger over all operations in Monterey, Santa Cruz, and San Benito Counties. Frank married a local girl, Antoinette Randazzo, and they had three sons. One son followed dad’s footsteps and works for Berkeley Farms, a second owns Troia Ice Company and the third is an artist. Pacific Grove Mayor Al Wells started Frank in community service in 1956 by sponsoring his membership in the Kiwanis Club. Frank retired in 1962, to devote his time and energy to community service and golf. He served as President of the P.G. Kiwanis Club in 1962. He chaired a number of committees over the years – Boy’s and Girl’s Activities – Agriculture and Conservation – Membershi – Community Service. He served seven years on the Board of Directors. He enjoys working at the Pancak Breafasts, Barbecues and the Kiwanis booth at the Fairgrounds. Over the years, Frank has brought 12 new members into Kiwanis. As Chairman of the Community Services Committee, Frank is now leading the repair and restoration of the bleachers at Pacific Grove’ Breakers Stadium. The High School bleachers are being dismantled, repaird and reconstructed, all by volunteer help and materials purchased with donations. “Call me if you can help with labor or donations,” Frank says. Frank served on the P.G. Recreation Commission 20 years, chairing it twice. Completion of the Community Center and four playgrounds took palce during his tenure. He also worked for the American Red Corss, Heart Fund, American Cancer Society and United Way. For four years he volunteered at the Crosby Pro-Am Golf Tournament, in charge of ticket sales at Spyglass. “Colunteerism and Community Serice is a high priority,” Frank says. “I have always been a community oriented person and try to get people more involved. Kiwanis is an ideal organization to accomplish this.” He invites people interested in Kiwanis, the Bleacher Project, any of the services he has been involved in, or golf, to call him at 375-3853. “Leave a message. I will get right back to you,” Frank says.
