High School Graduation
Seven Young Ladies and One Young Man in the Class

The graduating exercises of the Pacific Grove High School were held last evening in the Assembly Hall of the Methodist Church. This was the day of days for the eight young people of the graduating class, Edith Telford, Viola Lee, Mabel Johnson, Vera Smith, Manoah Swetnam, Ruth Moose, Marie Eustace and Iva Cooley. The day that for four long years these almost children had looked forward to with happy anticipation. The loving hands of their schoolmates worked hard all of yesterday turning the Assembly Hall into a bower of green and white, the class colors. The walls back of the choir loft were completely covered with white roses and ferns. The class motto “Vorwarts,” done in La Marque roses on a green background, hung suspended over the heads of the class, while the columns which support the gallery were wound with ribbons of green and white crepe paper. The hall was filled with the friends and acquaintances of the young people. The high school pupils acted as ushers. At a little after eight o’clock as Miss Fridley’s orchestra struck up the strains of a march the class filed in, seven young girl graduates, sweet and dainty in their fluffy white gowns, and one manly young fellow standing out conspicuously in his suit of black. After the class came the faculty, members of the Board of Education and Chaplain Moose. Then the scholars of the Pacific Grove High School, who massed themselves in an effective group in the choir loft. The program which had been prepared with a great deal of work reflected great credit upon both class and teachers. The numbers were all well given and showed a thorough training in English. The class prophecy is always looked forward to. Last evening this task fell to the lot of Marie Eustace, much to the delight of her audience. Taking each member of the class in turn she cast a very clever horoscope. The ensemble singing, under the direction of Professor A.T. Merrill, was greatly appreciated by the audience. The young people were the recipients of many lovely flowers and not a few presents of greater value. The entire program was as follows: Orchestra; invocation, Chaplain Moose; salutation, Edith Telford; school chorus; Class History, Viola Lee; “A Story,” Mabel Johnson; vocal solo, Mr. A.T. Merrill; Class Poem, Vera Smith; Oration, Manoah Swetnam; orchestra; “Ourselves,” Ruth Moose; Class prophecy, Marie Eustace; violin and cornet duet, Miss Fridley and Mr. Lease; Valedictory, Iva Cooley; presentation of diplomas, Mr. A. Blohm; benediction, Chaplain Moose; orchestra.
