Monterey Peninsula Herald, CA Dec. 21, 1980 p4
Phyllis Burn Smith of Carmel, active in volunteer services, died Friday at Beverly Manor Convalescent Hospital after brief illness. She was 92. Born May 28, 1888, in Port Hope, Ontario, Canada, Mrs. Smith lived in Berkeley from 1922 to 1961, when she moved to Carmel. She attended Bishop Bethune’s College in Montreal and during World War II she was active in war relief work. In 1940, she started a British war relief society, organizing a group of volunteers to visit camps and hospitals and to mend clothes in the Berkeley area during the war. Her memberships included Monterey Peninsula Volunteer Services and the Monterey Peninsula Country Club. She is survived by her husband, Bryan H.; son, retired Navy Capt. Bryan H. Smith Jr.; sister, Mrs. Russell Clark of Richfield, Conn., three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. No services are planned. Cremation will be held at the Little Chapel by-the-Sea, with The Paul Mortuary in charge of arrangements. The family suggests that memorial contributions be sent to the Monterey Peninsula Volunteer Services.
