Pacific Grove Tribune, CA Sept. 6, 1978
DeFords return to tradition
P.G. child born at home

Robert and Lois DeFord had a natural childbirth in their Pacific Grove home this summer. That may seem unusual to some people, but there have been four other natural home childbirths in the DeFords’ Spruce Avenue neighborhood in the last fewe years. In fact, their apprentice midwife, Jan Dunlap, lives just across the street. The DeFords are just part of a new movement away from hospital births, back to the more traditional type of bearing children. Although the DeFords say that peninsula doctors advise against home births (you have to go as far away as natividad Hospital in Salinas for prenatal care, they say), more and more peninsula families are opting for births in a home environment. “It’s the richest experience I’ve ever had,” says Robert, referring to “the beauty and uniqueness” of attending his wife during birth. Lois does not like the sterile and unfriendly atmosphere of hospitals and the separation of mother and child after a birth. “Hospitals are just not a very relaxed place to be,” she says. Besides, at home with family and friends, Lois feels ‘more in control.” But home births are not for everyone, Lois says. A woman has to be confident and committed to the idea. Lois had her first child at home when she and Robert lived in Big Sur, with just Robert in attendance. This time the DeFords had a midwife from Santa Cruz, Fran Day, and an assistant. It is a lot pleasanter and safer with a trained midwife, Lois says. Midwifes know what to do to make births easier. The final stage of birth can take anywhere form 10 minuts to four hours and it si good tohave someone who thoroughly understands the operation. Midwives are also there in case of emergencies, although Lois says fewer than five percent of all births require emergency care. In fact, Lois maintains, there is more chance of complication in a hospital than at home. Abigail Ruth was born in mid-August. It was an early birth, Lois says, and a pure joy.
