Boston Globe, MA, May 13, 1984
Edward E. Lowery, 81, of Pebble Beach, Calif., a Newton native and former Boston advertising man who in 1927 won the Massachusetts amateur golf championship, died Friday, May 4, of respiratory failure in the Eisenhower Medical Center at Palm Springs, Calif. Mr. Lowery had worked for the old Boston Herald Traveler and Boston Post advertising departments before moving to San Francisco in 1937 where he operated several Ford automobile dealerships. Before that, however, he had become known as the young caddy for the famed Francis Ouimet. Young Lowery was photographed struggling with Ouimet's bag as the golfer walked alongside in the 1913 US Open at Brookline - a picture that became famous among golfers. Mr. Lowery, a lover of the game, in 1919 and 1920 won the Massachusetts junior championship, and the state amateur title in 1927. He was a runner-up in 1931 and 1933. He teamed with a friend and partner, Byron Nelson, also a name golfer, to win the pro-am division of the Big Crosby National Pro-Am Golf Championship in 1955. He was known for the help he gave young golfers seeking professional careers, according to reports. Among them were Ken Venturi, two-time US national amateur champion E. Harvey Ward and Bob E. Smith, a former California amateur champ. His own tournament, the Ed Lowery Invitational, according to reports, became a prestigious amateur tournament. He had played in tournaments around the world, including the British Amateur and International Senior Golf Society tournaments. He was president and a member of numerous golf organizations. He leaves his wife, Mary Margaret (McGill) of Pebble Beach; a daughter, Cynthia E. Lowery of Boston; a son, John E. Lowery of Los Angeles; his sisters, Frances Sheerin of Mountain View, Calif., and Alice Lawton of Newton Highlands, Mass., and a brother, Jack Lowery, also of Newton Highlands. A funeral service was held May 7. He was buried in El Carmelo Cemetery, Pacific Grove.
