G.W. Lonigan Passes to Rest
George Washington Lonigan, aged 93, for 17 years a respected citizen of the Grove, died at his house on Pacific street last Monday and was buried in El Carmelo cemetery Wednesday afternoon, with military honors and the services of the odd Fellows, of which lodge he was an honored member. Lonigan was a native of Indiana, born in 1831. He came to California in 1870 and has been a resident of Pacific Grove since 1913. He served in the Civil War from 1861 to 1866 and was a member of ???? First, of the G.A.R. in Stockton, California. He was also a member of the Stockton Lodge of the I.O.O.F. for 52 years. Funeral services were held Wednesday from the chapel of Paul Mortuary. Interment was at El Carmelo cemetery. The local Odd Fellows Lodge had charge of the services and were assisted at the grave by a detachment from the Presidio which rendered the customary military honors. Members of the Spanish War Veterans and the Women’s Relief Corps were present. Mr. Lonigan is survived by three daughters in Monterey, Mrs. L. Goldsworthy, Mrs. Clara Thompson and Mrs. Rose Campbell, by a daughter, Mrs. Charles Ferguson of Lodi; by a son, W.M. Lonigan of Pacific Grove; and by two brothers, Thomas T. Lonigan of Los Angeles, and William Lonigan of Oregon; and by 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
