Chronicle Staff Report
Carlisle B. Lane, a retired partner from the San Francisco law firm of Pillsbury Madison & Sutro, has died. He was 74. Mr. Lane died Oct. 14 at an Alzheimer's care facility in Menlo Park after a long illness. His peers knew him as "Ky" and recalled his quick wit and ability to handle complex real estate and commercial transactions. Mr. Lane was active in the long negotiations involved in the construction of the Embarcadero Center, which broke ground in 1968. He represented an insurance company that helped fund the project, which was built by developers from the Rockefeller family in New York. Charles Purnell, a fellow partner at Pillsbury Madison & Sutro, recalled that an attorney for the Rockefeller family later said the project would never have been built if not for Mr. Lane's efforts. He joined the San Francisco firm, now called Pillsbury Winthrop LLP, in 1950 and retired in 1991. During Mr. Lane's career, major cases he handled included his work in Paris on the acquisition of the Bank of California by Baron Edmond de Rothschild. He also represented Bank of America before the International Tribunal at the Hague in cases involving the freezing of Iranian assets following the fall of the shah of Iran in 1979. Born in San Francisco, Mr. Lane graduated from Lowell High School. He earned his undergraduate degree at the University of California at Berkeley and received his law degree from Harvard Law School. He served in the Navy from 1945 to 1947. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Josephine Lane of Menlo Park. Mr. Lane was buried in Pacific Grove [El Carmelo Cemetery] beside his daughter, Katherine Elizabeth Lane, who died of leukemia as a child. Contributions may be made in memory of the Lanes' daughter to the National Neurofibromatosis Foundation, 95 Pine St., 16th Floor, New York NY 10005.
