Pacific Grove Beacon, CA Oct. 13, 1995
50th anniversary for P.G. Couple
By Janis Cain
It was a world war that brought them together more than 50 years ago, and a recent international gathering of family and friends that helped a Pacific Grove couple celebrate their golden wedding anniversary. Alfred “Al” and Jean Quattrocchi met when Al was in the Canadian army, serving in Surrey, England, during WWII. Asked if it was love at first sight, Jean told the Beacon this weak, “I fell in love with his dancing first. After we met we did most of our courting by mail.” Al served in North Africa, Italy and Holland. “Right after VE Day, he came back to England on leave, and we got engaged. He went back to Holland for three months then returned to Surrey and we were married.” While the young couple honeymooned on the south coast of England, the world celebrated VJ Day. Al and Jean returned to Al’s hometown of Edmonton, Alberta after the war and raised their family there. They discovered Pacific Grove while visiting friends here in the early 60s. “I recognized tress and shrubs from England, and for me it felt like home,” said Jean. Among those traveling to Pacific Grove for the 50th Anniversary event were Jean’s sister, brother, and sister-in-law from England, and another brother and sister-in-law from Perth, Australia. One special guest was the “Flower Girl” from their wedding, 10-years old at the time, who now lives in Vancouver, BC. The Quattrocchi children, along with their four grandchildren, hosted the anniversary party. Their oldest daughter and husband came down from Alberta, Canada: their son and his fiancé from Berkeley, a daughter and granddaughter and son-in-law from Portland, Oregon, a cousin from Chicago, and another daughter from Monterey. Asked if she had any advice to others just starting out in their marriage, Jean said “There’s an awful lot of give and take. No marriage is ever 50-50, not now and not then. We always backed each other up, even if we didn’t agree, in disciplining the children. If you make rules, stay with them, don’t give in.
