Rileys celebrate 50th wedding anniversary
By Janis Cain
The daughters of Ken & Doris Riley, Pacific Grove, hosted a 50th Anniversary party for their parents at the home of Judy and Richard O’Mara on November 25. Fifty-five friends and family were there, including friends from England who remembered the way it was… Doris Dark was a secretary at the American Red Cross near Southampton, England when she fell in love with an American GI. Born in London, she was 19 years old and wondering if her parents would approve. Kenneth Riley was a long way from his Wetmore, Kansas home, when he met Doris. The young couple dated for several months and were taking a walk in the rain one night when the soldier proposed For Doris, the proposal extended far beyond a ceremony of marriage. She would not only need her parent’s permission to marry, but also their blessings to marry a “foreigner” and eventually make a pilgrimage to America. When Doris took Kenneth home to London to met the folks, her wishes were granted. Married Nov. 26, 1945, the young war bride left home on an ocean liner bound for New York. The newlyweds agreed to make a career of Army life and were eventually stationed at Ft. Ord. Future assignments took the Rileys around the globe, but they eventually settled in Pacific Grove, where they have lived since 1963. That was the year Kenneth retired from the military as Sergeant Major and began a w0 year career at the P.G. Post Office. Both are members of the Presidio of Monterey Chapel. Their daughters, in P.G. to host the surprise anniversary party, are Penny Riley of Elk Grove, Susan Fuoti of Orangevale, and Patricia Pappas of Kentfield. Asked for insight on how to keep a marriage healthy over the years, Doris told the Beacon it requires a “lot of patience and a lot of love.”
