Or. June 9th, 1771, Father Serra inspected the valley of the Carmelo in order to find a suitable site for the mission of San Carlos, which he had already planned to remove from the vicinity of the presidio. Finding a favorable locality, he put three sailors and four Lower Californians to work cutting timber for the edifice. Soldiers supervised the work and protected the laborers. When the work had started, Father Serra departed from the scene of activity, to found missions San Antonio de Padua, which he did. After returning from a stay of fifteen days, he went to the Carmelo in August to hasten the work of construction on the mission, which, up to this time, had proceeded very slowly, and in December, 1771, he and Father Crespi with five soldiers moved into the new buildings.
