These Monterey County Names Appeared On Recent Casuality list
The name of Jacob J. Hoffman, T/3, of Carmel was on Army casuality lists this week. His wife, Mrs. Sophie L. Hoffman, Box 2281, Carmel has already been notified by the war department. George W. Wooton, T/5, husband of Mrs. Elizabeth Wooton of 728 Jefferson street, Salinas, was also reported wounded in the Pacific area. Another wounded army man from Salinas was second Lt. William L. Endsley, husband of Mrs. Jessie L. Endsley of 61 Kentucky street, Salinas. Among the navy wounde din recent casualty lists, appeared the name of John Robert Freitas, seaman 2/c USNR, brother of Mrs. Romona Zwack, Monterey. Under a Sunday, June 10, dateline, the name of S/Sgt. Charles A. Grinder of Salinas is listed as an Army liberated prisoner of war. He is the son of Mrs. Maria Grinder of 131-A E Alissal street, Salinas. Also liberated from a German prison camp was 2nd Lieut. Tracey Beagle, husband of Mrs. Vera P. Beagle of 329 Salinas street, Salinas. In a June 11 dispatch, 2nd Lieut. Maurice H. Lynch, son of Mrs. Myrtle L. Tyo of Carmel was reported released; as was 2nd Lieut. Donald McDougall, sno of John E. McDougall of Salinas. Also from Salinas is Pvt. William L. Pierce, husband of Mrs. Geneva P. Pierce, who was wounded in action. Among the Army liberated prisoners of war in Germany was Pfc. Jesse Boothby, son of Jesse Boothby of Seaside. Staff. Sgt. Claude F. Costa, brother of Anthony F. Costa of Pacific Grove was also in this category. Among those listed as Army dead in the Pacific was Pfc. Clarence D. Driskill of Salinas. His wife, Mrs. Dorothy M. Driskill, of Salinas has already been notified. Liberated by the army in Germany according to Wednesday lists was Lieut. Ira B. Corpening, grandson of Mrs. Grace L. Beagle of Salinas. Sgt. Mark R. Meadows, husband of Mrs. Barbar M. Meadows, Rt. 1, Box 343, Monterey, was on his way home this week after being released by the arym from a Geramn prisoner of war camp.
