Golden, silver Wedding To Be Held Tonight
Parents and Children Celebrating Annivesaries of Gold and Silver
Grove Clubhouse Scene of Ceremonies
Younger Couple to Receive Silver Rings From Parents; Later Take Gold

This evening in Pacific Grove there will be celebrated a most unusual and happy event – the golden wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin B. Rich and the silver wedding anniversary of their daughter Gertrude and William Cecil Gretter. The Women’s Civic Club House has been chartered for the occasion to accommodate the guests. Mrs. J.A. Pell, Mrs. Ralph Olmstead and Mrs. E.E. Long of Pacific Grove and Mrs. Daniel Freeman of Monterey, friends of both couples for many years, are hostesses. Under the direction of the hostesses and Miss Sue Estelle Tuck – potted plams, ferns and banks of flowers have been used lavishly in decoration, the great open fire place is piled high with logs, the kitchen and dining room of the club house are packed with delicious food for the buffet supper to be served during the social hours of the evening after the double wedding ceremony. Wedding March Again. At 8:30 to the strains of the Wedding march Mr. and Mrs. E.B. Rich will enter the reception rooms of the clubhouse proceeded by their nineteen months old granddaughter, Margaret. Rich, who will strew flowers in their path. Following Mr. and Mrs. Rich, Mr. and Mrs. Gretter will enter, followed by Mr. and Mrs. C.E. Rich, their son, M.E. Rich and Miss Jennybell Gretter, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Cecil Gretter, and then the guests. Around the room all will form in a circle and the double wedding ceremony will be performed by the Rev. W.H. Battershill, rector of St. Marys’ by-the-Sea. Second Double Wedding. Twenty-five years ago a double wedding ceremony was performed when Miss Gertrude A. Rich became the bride of William Cecil Gretter and the bride’s parents celebrated their silver wedding anniversary using silver rings for the ceremony. These same silver rings will be used tonight for the younger couple, while the older couple will use the gold wedding ring worn first by Mrs. Rich’s mother at her wedding 74 years ago. After the wedding ceremonies a reception is to be held for the two hundred guests. A program of music is to be given during the evening and the main hall of the clubhouse will be given over to dancing for those who care for it, others will gather around the big fire place and review happy memories of bygone days in Pacific Grove. Bunker Hill Marriage. On September 30th, 1874, within the shadow of Bunker Hill monument in Charlestown, Mass., and within 100 feet of where they first met, Mr. and Mrs. Rich were married. In 1888 Mr. Rich brought his family to California settling in Pacific Grove which was their home for nearly 25 years. Mr. Rich very soon became one of the influential men of the town and was elected tax collector, which positon he held until he and Mrs. Rich moved to Oakland to make their ome at the Hotel Oakland with which Mr. Rich has been connected since its opening 12 years ago. One of the pleasant surprises in connection with the anniversary was the presentation to Mr. Rich of a gold purse filled with twenty $5 gold pieces, the gift of Manager Jurgens and the employees of the Hotel Oakland, just before Mr. and Mrs. Rich started for Pacific Grove Sunday. How Gretters Met. Gertrude A. Rich was born in Charlestown, Mass. She came with her parents to Pacific Grove when a small child. She has lived in Pacific Grove ever since with the exception of the first year of her married life which was spent in Salinas. One of the older boys in the Pacific Grove school was Cecil Gretter, son the school principal, G.W. Gretter. Cecil is a native of Monterey county, having been born in Chualar, while his father was principal of the school there. Gertrude Rich and Cecil Gretter both graduated from the Pacific Grove school. Gertrude remaining at home with her parents while Cecil went to the college of pharmacy at the Northwestern University in Chicago from which he graduated as one of the three Calfiornia boys who attended the university. He returned to Pacific Grove and went into the drug business there. For the past twenty years he has been a member of the partnership firm of Long & Gretter. Shortly after his return the childhood romance was renewed and Gertrude Rich became the bride of Cecil Gretter at a wedding ceremony performed in St. Mary’s By-the-Sea at Pacific Grove.
