Harry Ikeda, Hospice patient, celebrates 100th birthday Feb. 25
By Lynn Traynor
Hospice is all about living, and that’s what Harry Ikeda, Hospice of the Monterey Peninsula home care patient is celebrating – 100 years of living. Hospice nurses and staff brought a birthday party to him as an early celebration of his 100th birthday on February 25. Ikeda, who lives in Salinas with his family, eagerly awaited the arrival of his visitors bearing cake, ice cream and balloons. “He is doing remarkably well and is very stable,” said Hospice nurse Donna Hadrien. “A lot of credit gores to the loving care he had received at home from his daughters, and we are pleased to participate in that care.” Ikeda came to this country from Japan when he was 17. One of his earliest memories is being on a boat in San Francisco Bay during the earthquake of 1906. He moved to Salinas and worked as a janitor for Harry Tynan, who gave him the name Harry. He moved to Oxnard, then Los Angeles, where he became a gardener. Ultimately, he settled in Salinas to farm. He worked to save and buy the farm which he owns today, and now leases. Ikeda has five daughters, Two, Fay and Kazu and Kazu’s husband Ken Iagami, live with him and are his primary caregivers. Ikeda has been part of the Hospice program for a year. The Hospice program offers a total support system in the home for patients with life threatening illnesses and their families. The goal of Hospice is to enhance the quality fo life of patients and allow them to honor each day.
