San Jose Mercury News, CA, May 6, 1994, page 9B
Graveside services will be conducted today for Don Erwin, former official with the Santa Clara County Department of Social Services. Mr. Erwin died of cancer Monday at age 72 in a Monterey hospital. He was a resident of Pacific Grove. Donald George Erwin, born June 28, 1921, in Chicago, spent his first career in the Air Force. As a B-17 bomber pilot late in World War II, he parachuted behind enemy lines after his plane was shot down. One of the three Germans who captured him wanted to kill him on the spot, he later told his wife, Sharlene, but was talked out of it by the other two. Although he said he was not mistreated during nearly a year in prison camps, he developed a dislike for red cabbage and potatoes, Sharlene Erwin said. Maj. Erwin left the service after 21 years, moved to San Jose and earned his bachelor's degree from San Jose State University. In 1965, he became administrative services officer for the Santa Clara County Department of Social Services and directed the development of an automated case data system. The system, which has been adopted by 17 other California counties, computes such things as grant payments and issuance of benefits. Mr. Erwin was also instrumental in the evolution of a tax-saving concept of multi-county joint maintenance of the system, said Tom Johnson, a former colleague. After retiring in 1982, Mr. Erwin was chapter president of Retired Public Employees Association and chairman of his Sons in Retirement group. The Erwins moved to Pacific Grove in 1988. Mr. Erwin lived with cancer for 10 years, said his wife, who also worked with him in the social services department. In addition to his wife, Mr. Erwin is survived by sons, Marty Erwin of Weston, Conn., and Thomas James Erwin of Pacific Grove. Today's service will begin at 2 p.m. at El Carmelo Cemetery, at Lighthouse and Asilomar avenues in Pacific Grove. Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 26007, San Jose, Calif. 95159.
