Peninsula Men in the U.S. Armed Services
Pfc Ronald B. Cowen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard L. Cowen of 507 Beaumont Dr., Pacific Grove, is serving with the 25th Infantry Division in the “Iron Triangle” region of South Vietnam near the Cmabodian border. He is a tank driver. Cowen recently spent a leave at home following a tour of duty in Germany and prior to leaving for Vietnam
Several Peninsulans took part in the recent Blue Lotus fleet exercise off the Southern California coast. They include Electronics Technician Seaman Robert C. Nixon aboard the dock landing ship Oakhill, son of Mr. and Mrs. John A. Nixon Jr., of 1074 Wanglers Trail, Pebble Beach; aboard the attack transport Bayfield, Engineman Fireman Apprentice Steve Tealdi, son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis F. Tealdi of 356 Nelson Ave., Pacific Grove, and Boatswain’s Mate 3c. John J. Miller, son of Mr. and Mrs. Norville I. Miller of 114 9th St., Pacific Grove; Engineman 2c Peter L. Briley, aboard the guided missil destroyer Cochrane, who is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John M. Briley of 321 Palm Ave., Marina., Gunners Mate 2c Robert Steliga, son of Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Steliga of 142 Ford road, Carmel Valley, who serves aboard the guided missile frigate Gridley; and aboard the guided missile cruiser Long Beach, Seaman Donald A. Halkett, son of Mrs. Alice R. Halkett of Seaside, and Fire Control Technician 3c Bob Cristobal, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank F. Cristobal of 1220 Noche Buena, Seaside.
Seaman Recruit Douglas K. Davis of Pacific Grove has been graduated from nine weeks of basic training at the Naval Training Center in San Diego.
Promoted to aviation structural mechanic second class is Michael P. Mulligan, who is serving at the Naval Air Facility, Lajes Field, Azores, Portugal. His mother is Mrs. Gwyneth E. Tooke of Pacific Grove.
Marine Pvt. Loyde D. Yates has completed combat training at the Marine Corps’ Camp Pendleton. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Loyde Yates of 702 Ninth St., Pacific Grove. Not pghs
Radioman 3c John H. Rice is serving with the Navy in South Vietnam. He is assigned to a harbor defense unit at Nha Trang. His mother is Mrs. Olivia M. Butterstein of Pacific Grove. Not pghs
Airman Lee McKinney, son of Mr. and Mrs. Rex McKinney of 827 Second St., Pacific Grove, has completed basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. He is now assigned as a communications electronics specialist with Keesler AFB, Miss.
Lt. Col. David M. Ward has assumed the position of assistant deputy director of the Second Direst Air Support Center at Pleiku Air Base, Vietnam. He is the son of Mrs. Robert W. Wier of Pacific Grove.
