The Distinguished Flying Cross has been presented to Air Force Lt. Col. Kenneth R. Burns, son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth B. Burns of 1142 Del Monte Blvd., Pacific Grove. At the same time, Burns received the Bronze Star Medal and three awards of the Air Medal.
Fireman Appren. Darian G. Houde, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Houde of 810 Lighthouse Ave., Pacific Grove, recently helped his shipmates aboard the USS Cleveland rescue a downed jet pilot and copilot off the coast of Vietnam.
Airman Lawrence D. Esquival has graduated from aircraft mechanic technical school at Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas, and now is stationed at George AFB, Calif. His parents are Mr. and Mrs. E.R. Esquivel of 163 Laurel Ave., Pacific Grove.
Promoted to radioman second class is Jessie F. Mata, who is serving at the Naval Air Facility at Naha, Okinawa. His parents are Mr. and Mrs. Raymond F. Mata of 864 Junipero Ave., Pacific Grove.
Airman John F. Guerin Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. John F. Guerin of 508 Locust St., Pacific Grove, is being trained as a communications-electronics specialist at Keesler Air Force Base, Miss.

Sgt. Jose Garcia of the United States Army Recruiting Office in Monterey has announced that 11 Monterey Peninsula men enlisted in the Army in May. They were
George V. Vinson, son of Mr. and Mrs. V. Vinson of Monterey;
Ronald M. Ferranti, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph H. Ferranti of Monterey;
Michael D. Gould, son of Maj. and Mrs. Norman D. Gould of the Defense Language Institute;
Rudolph W. Engle, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Engel of Monterey.
Garret W. Luedloff, son of Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Luedloff of Pacific Grove;
Rick T. Prest, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard D. Prest of Pacific Grove;
James G. Huffman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph G. Huffman of Pacific Grove;
Walter T. Sparkuhl, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack P. Converse of Carmel Valley;
John W. Bennet, son of Mr. and Mrs. Cleveland Bennet of Seaside;
Terry Bell, son of Mr. and Mrs. Glen G. LaPlante of Fort Ord; and
Ronald L. Yaggi, husband of Mrs. Kazuko Yaggi of Marina.
