Santa Cruz Sentinel, CA Sept. 2000
Arlene I. Conte, a resident of the Monterey Peninsula, passed away at her home on September 14, 2000. A former San Jose resident, she was born in Salinas, CA on May 3, 1936 and was raised in Pacific Grove. She was a graduate of Pacific Grove High School and attended Monterey Peninsula College. A homemaker who was very involved with her children and grandchildren, she was a selfless, giving, champion of the underdog. Mrs. Conte was a member of St. Angela’s Catholic Church in Pacific Grove and served on the Board of the Pacific Grove High School Alumni Association. An accomplished geneologist [sic] and avid reader, she was also a member of the Pennsylvania Historical Society and the Daughters of the American Revolution. Mrs. Conte enjoyed traveling, especially the times she spent with her family in Big Sur. A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, she is survived by her loving husband of 46 years, Fred Conte; children, Janice Conte of Salinas, Karen Conte of San Jose, Stephen (Pam) Conte of Incline Village, NV, Dennis (Jill) Conte of San Jose and Shannon (Ron) Brown of San Jose; grandchildren, Shawna, Christine, Scott, Christopher, Briana, Taylor, Julia, Amanda, Chase & Madelaine. She is also survived by her aunt, Mildred Kereta and cousin, Rosemary O’Rourke. A vigil service will take place at St. Angela’s Church on Sunday, September 17 at 7:30 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated also at St. Angelas’s, on Monday, September 18, at 10:30 a.m. followed by burial at El Carmelo Cemetery, Pacific Grove. The Paul Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. Her active life was cut short by a tragic disease, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (Lou Gehrig Diseae), and so her family suggests contributions be made to the ALS Research Foundation, 2351 Clay St., #416, San Francisco, CA 84115.
