Kasson Avery, 84, a resident of Sir Francis Drake Hotel in San Francisco for the past 40 years and a frequent visitor to Carmel, where he had many friends, died June 7 in a Belmont nursing home after a brief illness. Member of a pioneer California family, he had never married. He grew up in Los Angeles and was graduated in 1905 from the University of California, Berkeley, receiving his law degree in 1907. He practiced law with his father, the late William H. Avery, and his brother, the late Judge Russ Avery, in the firm of Avery, French and Avery in Los Angeles until 1930, when he retired and moved to San Francisco along with his sister, Miss Yerva Avery. Mr. Avery was a lifelong member of the Sierra Club, in which he was active through the years, and also gave enthusiastic support to conservationist activities throughout California. He took a lively interest in San Francisco’s cultural activities and was a “first nighter” at the symphony concerts and other events. In addition to his sister, he is survived by a niece, Mrs. Avery Tompkins of Carmel. Private services have been held at the Little-Chapel-by-the-Sea in Pacific Grove, followed by inurnment in the family plot in Inglewood Park Cemetery of Inglewood. The Paul Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
