Monterey Peninsula Herald, CA April 25, 1940 p2
Donor of Chimes Taken by Death
Mrs. Flora Bell Philbrick, prominent long time resident of Pacific Grove, passed away yesterday at her home, 232 Eighteenth street, following an illness. She was 84 years old. A native of Skowhegan, Maine, Mrs. Philbrick came to Pacific Grove to make her home 35 years ago. Some time ago she donated the chimes now located in the bell tower of the city hall to the community in memory of her husband, the late Sumner E. Philbrick. Mrs. Philbrick leaves a daughter, Mrs. Marilyn Bowhay of Bakersfield; three grandchildren; a nephew, Dr. H.H. Cuashing of Massachusetts; a niece, Mrs. George Palmer of Boston; and her cousin, Miss Rose A. Shirley who made her home with Mrs. Philbrick in Pacific Grove. Mrs. Philbrick was prominent in many Pacific Grove organizations and was a member of the Mayflower Congregational church, the D.A.R., the Muricata club and the Colony of New England Women. Funeral services will be held tomorrow (Friday) morning at 10 o’clock at Mayflower church with Rev. John H. Hunter officiating. Following the services the body will be taken to Evergreen cemetery, Oakland, and placed in the mausoleum there. Tentative plans were made today to play some special music on the city hall chimes immediately after services for Mrs. Philbrick.
