Monterey Peninsula Herald, CA Sept. 23, 1940 p1
P.G. Youth Victim of Accident
W.I. Anderson, 18, Is Hurled to Death as Light Car Overturns
Hurled from a light coupe when it skidded and overturned in a ditch one mile south of Pacific Grove on the Carmel-Pacific Grove highway, William I. Anderson, 18 years old Grove high school graduate, met instant death late yesterday afternoon. Anderson, the son of Sgt. And Mrs. W.A. Anderson, 429 Eardley avenue, Pacific Grove, was thrown clear of the skidding car, landing on his head on the hard pavement. His skull was crushed and his neck broken, according to police who said the unfortunate youth died instantly. Driver of the car, Don Fauth, also 18, of the Forest Hill hotel, was thrown through the roof of the light coupe but escaped without a scratch. As police pieced together details of the accident told them by Fauth and witnesses, the boys were driving south towards Carmel, following a car driven by Lt. C.C. Crawford of Fort ord. When they reached the straightaway behind the presidio dirt parade ground, Fauth turned the coupe to pass the Crawford car. Hitting a dirt road shoulder, the coupe skidded and overturned throwing both youths clear. Police said Crawford told them Fauth was driving about 45 miles an hour when the fatal accident happened. Highway patrolman Charles Garcia, assisted by Officers Victor Tibbs and Leo McCoy of the Grove force, investigated the crash. They said the car in which the youths were riding had been borrowed from a friend. Anderson was graduated from the Pacific Grove high school with the class of 1940. Born in Saratoga, he had lived in Pacific Grove for the past 17 years. Besides his parents, he leaves two sisters, Mr. Zelda Pearson of Byron, California, and Miss Akmira Anderson of Pacific Grove, and a brother, Bruce, Pacific Grove. He also leaves his grandmother, Mrs. Anna M. Baxter of Pacific Grove. Other local relatives include an aunt, Mrs. Florence Lingle, and two uncles, Stephen and Cecil Plaskett, all of Monterey. An investigation into the death will be held today or tomorrow, according to J.K. Paul, deputy coroner. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 o’clock tomorrow (Tuesday) afternoon from the Paul Mortuary with Rev. W.V. Morgan and Rev. Elwood Hunter officiating. Burial will be in the Monterey Presidio cemetery.
